Donor Recognition

The Huntington has always cultivated mutually satisfying and lasting relationships with its donors, volunteers, and friends. Thanking and recognizing donors for their generous contributions is central to these relationships. As a comprehensive campaign, For Generations to Come — The Campaign for The Huntington recognizes all donors, whether individuals, corporations, foundations, or government entities. We invite our donors to take public pride in their support, to associate their names with The Huntington, and to allow their philanthropy to set an example for others. We understand, however, that some donors may wish to decline public recognition or to limit it to selected circles of the Huntington donor community. They may choose to honor a third party through a gift. We always respect these wishes.

In keeping with the Campaign Reporting Standards, we report countable gifts at fair market value, and we recognize donors of gifts that are unrestricted or restricted, whether pledged, in cash, in-kind, or planned as follows:

Institutional Recognition

  • Current Patron- and Benefactor-level Members, all donors to the Society of Fellows, and all other donors of $500 or more are recognized in The Huntington’s annual report and on the Campaign Web site.
  • Donors of gifts made in memory or in honor of another are listed in the annual report.
  • Donors of $50,000 or more receive recognition in the Campaign honor rolls.
  • The Huntington’s Successors recognize donors whose cumulative gifts to all purposes total $100,000, $500,000, $1 million, $5 million, and $10 million or more. Successors are honored at an annual event, and their names appear on a permanent recognition wall that is updated annually to acknowledge advanced levels of giving.
  • Donors of planned gifts, both revocable and irrevocable, are recognized through the Henry E. and Arabella Huntington Heritage Society.
  • Donors of in-kind gifts, whether as contributions to the collections or other personal or real property, are recognized through special listings in published honor rolls, within institution documentation and/or signage, and by other appropriate means.
  • Donors of $1 million or more receive a special leadership gift as well as a Trustee Resolution acknowledging such extraordinary support.

Annual Gifts
All annual gifts, including multi-year pledges, are recognized in the fiscal year the gift is received.

Unrestricted

  • The Society of Fellows annual donors and all Corporate Partners ($1,000 - $100,000 or more) receive acknowledgment on the annual donor wall, in published honor rolls, and through a series of identifiable benefits and special invitations.
  • All members ($80-$1,250) receive an array of member services and benefits.
  • All other donors who make unrestricted gifts of $500 or more are recognized on appropriate lists.

Restricted

  • Donors whose gifts are restricted to a specific operating activity receive appropriate acknowledgment attached to that particular exhibition, program, or activity.

Capital Gifts
In permanent recognition of Henry Huntington’s legacy, all buildings and collections that were part of the original indenture remain under his name. Donors to the Campaign whose gifts help to meet the capital goals will receive all due and proper institutional recognition as well as:

  • Huntington Gallery renovation — recognition on a donor wall situated in the entry of the restored House and acknowledgement at selected galleries.
  • Huntington Library electrical and Botanical Garden irrigation renovations — recognition on appropriately-sited plaques.
  • Chinese Garden construction – for gifts of $10,000 or more, listing on the Summer Garden donor wall; for gifts of $100,000 or more, appropriate acknowledgement at selected sites.

Gifts to the Endowment
Endowment gifts continue to give year after year. They help to secure The Huntington’s future by forming a fund the corpus of which is held in perpetuity and invested — only a portion of the annual earnings are spent. Donors of gifts to the endowment receive all due and proper institutional recognition and:

  • Donors of less than $50,000 may direct their gifts to the institutional endowment that supports annual operations or to a pooled fund that supports a particular division or program.
  • Donors of $50,000 or more may establish a Named Fund to provide for the ongoing operations and maintenance of a particular division, space, collection, or program. The donor of Named Fund receives a report annually on the status of the Fund, its annual valuation, and the benefits accrued. The Huntington may also extend special recognition, invitations, or reports on the activities the Fund supports.
  • Donors whose gifts meet the established endowment minimums may establish a Named Position, the spendable income from the Fund going to support that position and related expenses. The position carries the Name in perpetuity, and other special recognition may be issued. Financial Affairs provides donors with annual reports on the status of the Fund, and the holder of the Named Position keeps the donor apprised of the ongoing benefits of the Fund.

Through these and other means, and always in accordance with the donor’s wishes, The Huntington gratefully thanks every donor and acknowledges every gift.
